Native and endemic species

The fauna and flora found in the Galapagos Islands are exceptional, and include species that are native or endemic to this archipelago or its surrounding waters. Native species are those which occur naturally in Galapagos, and endemic are those which are normally found and breed only in the archipelago or Galapagos Marine Reserve. Endemic species may even be restricted to one island.

It is impossible to be sure of the number of Galapagos species - new ones are being brought to light continuously, especially in the areas of entomology and botany. Species are also revised and re-classified in the light of continuing studies, often as a result of genetic analysis. The CDF web site provides information about many of these species.
