The flora of Galapagos contains a total of 560 native species, of which some 180 are endemic. These interact with the native fauna to form complex ecosystems. CDF scientists are continually discovering new species to add to the list.

Since the arrival of humans, these species and communities have been exposed to frequent disturbances, mainly due to the introduction of alien species. It is estimated that approximately 50-60% of the endemic plant species of Galapagos are threatened, according to IUCN criteria (2000).
Botanical research carried out at the Charles Darwin Research Station maintains the objective of conservation of native and endemic plants and their ecosystems in Galapagos.
