Since the arrival of humans, endemic and native plant species and communities have suffered frequent disturbances, mainly due to the introduction of alien species affecting the balance of delicate Galapagos ecosystems. Direct use by controlled extraction of some species increases the pressure on ecosystems. Approximately 50-60% of the endemic plant species of Galapagos are threatened, according to IUCN criteria (2000).
Botanical research carried out at the Charles Darwin Research Station is focused on the conservation and restoration of native and endemic plants and their ecosystems in Galapagos.
