The herbarium is open to researchers and volunteers of the Charles Darwin Research Station, as well as visiting scientists. The herbarium is not open to the general public.
Because of National Park Regulations and Ecuadorian Quarantine Law, loans of specimens are only granted in rare exceptions. Material cannot be sent by mail.
The collections represent the results of many expeditions and years of curation, study and preservation. It is imperative that this important source of research material be well protected. Therefore, access to the collection area is restricted and carefully monitored. The decision as to whether an individual researcher may gain access to the collection rests with the curator; other professional staff may provide supervised access to bona fide researchers.
Those who use the collections for study are required to follow the procedures and policies of the herbarium.
- No bags, packs, or food may be brought inside the herbarium.
- No smoking.
- Before entering, a Herbarium Use Form must be completed as to who entered, for what purpose, for what specimen(s), etc. The herbarium requests that users provide comments and suggestions as to how to improve and better facilitate the use of the herbarium.
- Once inside the herbarium, all specimens must be handled with the greatest of care, and according to the instructions of the curator.
- All specimens must be replaced in the same manner as found, including closing airtight, insect-proof materials.
- All specimens used must be noted on the Herbarium Use Form.
- Labels must not be removed.
- If it is necessary to dissect or remove plant parts, prior permission must be obtained from the curator. All such removed or dissected plant parts must not be discarded but should be placed in a fragment envelope and attached to the specimen mount card.
