CDRS Herbarium projects

CDRS scientists are carrying out and planning a number of projects to develop the Herbarium. working in the herbarium

Seed Bank

In 2007 CDF botanists will initiate a collection of germplasm in collaboration with the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. The objective is to conserve seeds of endemic specieas and rare and endangered native species of Galapagos. The majority of the seeds will be collected by the staff of the CDF Botany Department.

Cladistic analysis of morphological characters of the genus Lecocarpus and Calendrinia galapagosa

The genus Lecocarpus has not been revised in recent years. The objective of this cladistic analysis is to obtain data about the morphology and distribution of the species throughout the islands.

According to the IUCN red data book, Calendrinia galapagosa is a critically endangered species. It is currently being studied using both phenotypical and molecular analyses. Several hybridization and autopollination experiments are also in progress to better understand the phenotypic variation observed in this species.

Pollen Atlas

In 2001-2003 a pollen library was assembled at the CDRS herbarium and the herbarium of the Universidad de Málaga (MGC). This library currently includes descriptions, permanent microscope mounts, and scanning electron micrographs of all species of the endemic genus Scalesia. By the end of this year, descriptions of the genera Darwiniothamnus and Jasminocereus will be completed. Publication of a pollen atlas of endemic species of Galapagos is also planned for the future.

Lichen Flora of Galapagos

In 2005 an inventory of the lichen flora of the archipelago was initiated. More than 4,000 specimens have so far been collected from various islands. The material is currently being identified, and a new checklist of the Galapagos lichens will be published soon.
