Celebrating seven years of the Galapagos Biodiversity and Education for Sustainability Fund
This year marks the seventh anniversary of the Galapagos Biodiversity and Education for Sustainability Fund (GBESF), a visionary partnership led by Ecoventura and the Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF). Established on July 31st, 2017, the GBESF provides sustainable financial support aimed at preserving the unique ecosystems and wildlife of the Galapagos Islands. From groundbreaking scientific research to impactful educational initiatives, this collaborative effort has yielded remarkable outcomes over the past seven years.
Notable achievements include tagging pregnant scalloped hammerhead sharks which provided essential data for managing marine protected areas, and conducting health assessments of endemic Galapagos landbirds which is directly contributing to the reintroduction of extinct bird species on Floreana Island. Additionally, it has enabled pioneering research into the effects of anthropogenic activities and climate change on sea turtle populations, enabling the design of timely adaptation plans to conserve this iconic marine species. Beyond scientific research, the GBESF has prioritized educational initiatives, recognizing the vital role of the local community in conservation efforts.
As we celebrate this milestone, we also recognize Ecoventura’s role in hosting CDF’s Major Donor Cruises, funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. The last one of these expeditions has helped CDF raise $7 million from the Bezos Earth Fund and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to support deep-sea exploration in Galapagos and the Eastern Tropical Pacific.
Looking ahead, the Charles Darwin Foundation and Ecoventura remain committed to the long-term sustainability of the Galapagos Islands. The GBESF will continue to drive research, conservation, and educational projects and programs, supported by the unwavering dedication of our partners and donors.
