The Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF) donated 200 protective suits to the Galapagos National Park Directorate, to support efforts to mitigate the health emergency due to COVID-19.
These supplies were delivered on the 2nd of June, directly to the director of the Galapagos National Park, Mgs. Danny Rueda. "We are grateful for the donation made by the Charles Darwin Foundation, with this equipment we will continue to provide security in the work that the park rangers are carrying out, such as the disinfection of public spaces in the context of the health emergency and fumigation to prevent the spread of dengue," Rueda said.
"Galapagos is moving into a new phase, and therefore everyone is preparing to comply with the health recommendations. From the Charles Darwin Foundation, we are supporting, on this occasion, the Galapagos National Park with Biosecurity suits so that staff are protected while performing the corresponding tasks, " said Gabriela Sommerfeld, representative of the CDF board of directors.
In the past month, CDF has donated two ventilators to the local Hospital and has also contributed personal protection equipment for the Galapagos Biosafety Agency and the Ecuadorian Ministry of Public Health, as well as laboratory supplies for the health emergency, provided medicines for people from vulnerable groups, and donated hospital mattresses. CDF also made a vehicle available to local authorities to transport supplies, and provided a biosecurity chamber on loan to laboratories that are analyzing coronavirus tests.
Among other actions, food has been distributed to Galapagos residents who are trapped on mainland Ecuador due to travel restrictions, as well as to local community members on the islands facing an economic crisis generated by the coronavirus. The crisis has been caused mainly by the reduction of tourism, the main source of income for the islands.
